A brilliant brand-builder, Roché became the first African American female vice president at Avon Products in 1981. She ultimately became the company’s first VP of Global Marketing, responsible for taking its Anew cosmetics line global, raising worldwide sales by 170%. In 1995, she moved to Carson Products, maker of Dark & Lovely and Magic Shave, gaining a promotion to president and COO within two years. After her stint at Carson and roles as an independent consultant, Roché took on the role as president and chief executive officer of Girls Inc. Today, she sits on the corporate boards of Macy’s and Tupperware Corp. In The Empress Has No Clothes, Roché’s memoir about her struggles to overcome self-doubt in the workplace, she wrote, “The imposter syndrome doesn’t allow any success to go unpunished.” The book has helped countless black women who share similar challenges.
