13 Chaka Khan Songs That Shaped Black Womanhood

Chaka Khan has shaped black womanhood through her lyrics. Early on in her career, she unapologetically gave black women permission to explore their feelings, love hard, and be proud of their womanhood. Before there were women shouting “girl power” she let the world know that she was every woman: natural hair, full lips, and all! Now ladies, tell me that’s not your anthem.

In fact, she was known for being as outspoken and engaged politically in her Chicago community before she signed a major deal in the 1970s. In 1969, she joined the Black Panther Party in Chicago where she worked on the Free Breakfast Program and sold The Black Panther newspapers.

The 10-time Grammy Award winner’s unique history and voice has empowered women all over the world. Needless to say, she’s always been a force to be reckoned with. And we cannot wait to honor her at this year’s Legacy Awards Gala at the Woman of Power Summit in Vegas on Feb. 28. All hail the queen of funk. No, seriously! Be sure to purchase your tickets for the event so that you can say that you’ve been in the same room as Chaka Khan and 1,200 other powerful women.

Until then, here are 13 songs that shaped black womanhood:
