The 9 Strangest Things Ever Sold on eBay

They say, “Everything has a price.” That old adage has never been more obvious than with the news of a recent auction on eBay. CNN reports that a Cheeto (yes, the cheese-dusted snack) resembling the late gorilla Harambe, allegedly sold for $100,000 on the bidding site.

The verified seller’s page does, in fact, show a curiously shaped Hot Cheeto, which sold for $99,999 on February 7.  It’s speculated that the Cheeto is of the Xxtra Flamin’ Hot variety.

There have been quite a few oddball transactions in eBay’s 21-year history. Here are nine more of the strangest things ever sold on the site:

 

1. An Entire Village

 

A small Tuscan village in Italy, Pratariccia, went up for auction in 2012. Its bid price was $3.1 million. The village was practically a ghost town covering 20 acres and consisting of 25 buildings.

2. The Hollywood Sign

 

It’s as famous as any movie star; the iconic Hollywood sign, with its white letters, nestled into the Hollywood Hills. In 1978, the original sign was replaced. The original was sold on eBay by a Hollywood producer for $450,400.

3. Albert Einstein Letter

 

A handwritten letter from the scientist and mathematician fetched $3 million. The letter contained Einstein’s thoughts on religion and the existence of God.

4. Golf with Tiger Woods

 

In 2002, a bidder paid $425,000 to golf with Woods at the Isleworth Country Club, The money went to Woods’ charity, the Tiger Woods Foundation for youth programs.

5. Lunch with Warren Buffet

 

eBay hosted a power lunch with Buffet and the highest bidder at the famous Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York City. The winning bid was $3.4 million, and the proceeds went to charity.

6. A Super Tricked-Out Luxury Bus

 

In 2005, a 45-foot luxury bus with a queen-sized bed, washer and dryer,  HD TVs, leather couches, and other amenities sold for $265,000.

7. Britney Spears’ Hair

 

They can never leave Britney alone; even on eBay. Right after the performer shaved her head

in 2007, the salon where she performed the infamous shearing put locks of Spears’ hair up for auction–with an asking price of $1,000,000. This was a violation of eBay’s policy, and the auction was quickly shut down.

8. The Country of New Zealand

 

In 2006, an Australian placed the entire country of New Zealand on eBay with an opening bid of a penny. According to an article from TheRegister.co.uk, the man who put the country up for sale had written in the eBay ad that the country had “very bad weather” and “the dodgiest America’s Cup win ever.” The ad was quickly removed by eBay, with a spokesman assuring the public that New Zealand was not for sale.

9. Princess Beatrice’s Hat

 

Princess Beatrice’s unusual hat stole the spotlight at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011. The hat became the subject of countless memes and even had its own Facebook page. The hat was put up for auction and sold for a little over £81,000 British pounds (currently, a little over $101,000 USD).
